Advanced System Optimizer provides many tools to diagnose issues and maintain your computer's performance. Smart PC Care is one of these features. It combines several PC system utility features into one computer-scanning engine for the user's convenience. While you could perform each task using a handful of tools, it’s very helpful to have these functions in one place.

The Common Problems Fixer tab in this PC system utilities application includes features for fixing standard issues your computer might have, including fine-tuning your system, optimizing security settings and locating duplicate files.

The PC Fixer identifies problems your computer might be dealing with and presents you with possible solutions. Think of it sort of like a troubleshooting guide. Your computer might not currently be suffering from any of the issues the PC Fixer can identify, but it’s good to understand how to solve them because they will inevitably come up.

Other features of this PC system utility work together to identify and solve security concerns. The System and Security Advisor feature gives advice on optimizing the system and security settings that can eat up a lot of system resources. The System Advisor portion of this feature checks your display items and system settings to identify security vulnerabilities, while the Security Advisor covers Windows services, network and Internet Explorer settings, system security options, file associations, and firewall and anti-virus applications. Together, these tools spot settings that aren’t crucial to the operation of your system, so you can implement the recommendations without having to worry about crashing your system.

This application boasts a comprehensive feature set. First and foremost, we were pleased with how little time it took to actually copy our test DVD. From start to finish it only took 20 minutes to copy a 90-minute movie. This is one of the quickest applications we tested. One of the software's features is the ability to retain bonus material. Another feature automatically attempts to restore scratched or otherwise damaged DVDs. You can also include subtitles or choose to keep or omit movie menus.

Something we were really impressed with is the software's ability to copy episodic DVD movies. If you don't want to worry about burning a disc, you can back up the DVD to your hard drive. This is useful for laptop owners because playing a movie from the hard drive rather requires less battery power than if you were to use a DVD.

Something to remember is that a DVD copy software application is only as good as its compression engine, and 1Click DVD Copy has one of the best in the business. This means that you can copy and compress a professional Hollywood movie recorded on a dual-layer DVD-9 to a standard, easy-to-find, cheaper DVD-5. This will save you space while retaining a high-quality copy of both the audio and video. If you don't want to bother with compression, 1Click DVD Copy can also copy and burn to a dual-layer DVD-9, making a clone of the original disc. Other features in this DVD copy software include the ability to set the burn speed and DVD-R write mode.

There is a limitation with this product, however. Unlike other DVD copy software applications we reviewed, 1Click DVD Copy requires you to download a third-party decrypter online. Not to worry, though; we found a free online CSS decryptor called DVD43 that works fantastically. It is a simple decryptor application that runs in the background. Once you do have the decryption tool, copying movies is a one-click process. This allows you to legally clone commercial DVDs and create backup copies of all your favorite movies.

What really makes a DVD copy application good is the feature set. DVD Cloner offers more features than you may know what to do with at first glance, but trust us, you will find them all useful as you get to know the application. Some of the features we found especially useful are the compression, the speed and the codecs available. With all of these options you will have an easy time making backup copies of your favorite movies for the off-chance that the original disc gets damaged.

The first feature we want to talk about is the compression. You may not realize it, but just as you can decrease the file size on your music to fit more on a disc, you can do the same with your movies. You can make an exact DVD clone with perfect 1:1 quality. However, if you would rather fit two movies on one disc, or compress a DVD-9 to a DVD-5, all of the options are available with DVD Cloner 2013. There is also the option of just ripping the movie and storing it on your hard drive. Not only does this particular DVD copy application work with DVDs, but it is good for Blu-rays and HD DVDs as well. So long as your disc drive can accommodate these types of discs, you can rip them to your hard drive or burn them to other discs.

When making a copy, sometimes you don't want all of the content included on the disc. Seriously, do you really need all of the previews or even all of the language tracks? By excluding some of the special features, you can keep a high-quality copy and take up less space. The most common form of copying a disc is to go from a DVD-9 dual layer to a smaller DVD-5 single layer. While you can compress the disc, which works really well when using DVD Cloner 2013, if you decide not to include every little special feature you can save a lot of space without sacrificing the quality of the movie. This is also true with scenes. Though it doesn't give you the full control that you would have with video editing software, it is really easy to remove a scene you don't want your kids watching.

Photoscape is a little confusing when you first run the program. There are essentially seven main features within Photoscape: Animated GIF; Batch Editor; Editor; Page, where you can assign a page size and multiple-image layout; Merge, which is similar to Page, but more of a photo-montage or poster tool; Print; and Viewer, in which you can see the images in your folder displayed as thumbnails.

The Merge, Page, and Print features work more or less the same, but have nuances that may make each more or less useful to your particular application. Photoscape's Print, for example, is great if you are printing hard copies of your images. You can set the space between photos and drag and drop the pictures. You can set the size of the prints and fit as many as you can to the page. Photoscape's Page feature works in a similar manner but uses pixels to create a montage of images for web or blog use. You can't overlap and create digital paper art, like with Serif CraftArtist Compact (free), for example, but you can use Photoscape to easily create montages.

Photoscape's photo editing tools are mostly basic and include adjustments for brightness, color, and contrast, plus levels, sharpen, and filter tools. Some of the filters in Photoscape are fabulously unusual: Region makes a selected spot your focal point; Fake Tilt Shift makes wide photos look like miniature models by faking the depth of field and adding blur; Graduated Tint darkens the sky or top of your image. Reflection creates a reflection of your image in whatever color you choose.

Photoscape also includes the filters you may expect, such as Antique Photo and Vignetting. Compared to CameraBag 2, a photo editing tool that specializes in creating vintage style from your images, Photoscape is a little lacking in this department and may leave you feeling like you're flying blind. The vignette styles, for example, are labeled #1 through #10. At least you can click through and preview them all.

The Film Effect filters also are a step behind CameraBag 2, and unless you've ever used Velvia or Provia films, you'll probably just be a little confused. If you don't know what 35mm transparency film is, skip Photoscape's Film Effects.

Adobe rolled out Photoshop CC in the past week, enhancing the gold standard of image-editing applications with powerful new capabilities. Let's test these intelligent tools folded into the new version, and figure out if it's worth it to upgrade.

Once I installed the evaluation copy of Photoshop CC provided to me by Adobe, I noticed that the interface looked exactly the same as its predecessor, Photoshop CS6. That's good. Photoshop's workflow is excellent and hard to improve upon.

And then I was met with a pleasant surprise: Photoshop asked if I would like to import all my settings. Of course I would like to import my settings! Importing settings has become a tedious ritual every time I upgrade Photoshop, and it's always been an awkward routine involving exporting and then importing files that don't completely get the job done.

But now it was completely easy, and best of all, done immediately in a most comprehensive way. In one fell swoop, an accumulation of all the idiosyncratic settings and shortcuts I've developed since I first started using Photoshop 2.5 back in 1992 were seamlessly inserted into Photoshop CC. This review was off to a great start.
