As part of the popular Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing family of products, this application delivers effective typing lessons geared towards typists of all ages. This Deluxe version is lean on features (especially compared to other Mavis Beacon products) but constitutes an excellent choice if you want to brush up on your typing skills.

One of the most impressive things about this typing software is the vast number of typing exercises it offers. The application boasts more than 300 exercises to cultivate proper touch-typing skills, this number being second to only one other typing program we reviewed (also a Mavis Beacon product). The software even includes a handful of typing games to help break up the potential monotony of keyboarding practice.

Virtual hands mimic your finger motions on a virtual keyboard as you type prepared text. If you strike the right key, the finger is highlighted green and the text appears black. If you make a mistake, the finger shows a red light and the text is red as well. Unlike some typing programs, this typing software allows you to go back and correct any mistakes. You will end up with accurate typed text, though your speed will slightly decrease if you fix mistakes. Either way, you can clearly see where you have made errors, which will help you improve when you embark on another practice exercise.

Unlike our higher-ranked typing software, this application does not have an adaptive learning component. This means the software does not prompt or require you to repeat lessons if you don't achieve satisfactory results, nor does it customize lessons based on your needs. Subsequently, the typing software requires a fair amount of self-monitoring, and you have to make sure you are completing each lesson to the best of your ability.

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Deluxe may not be the most feature-rich typing software, but it is among the easiest to use. This typing program is polished, professional looking and extremely easy to use. The navigation is intuitive, and you are seamlessly guided through each progressive lesson.

All the Right Type educational typing software is widely used in schools, corporations and even military organizations. While it isn't the most polished or modern typing software on the market, the application has sound teaching techniques developed by educators that can effectively teach anyone how to touch-type.

This latest version of All the Right Type is web based (a downloadable version is still available if you prefer), so you can conveniently log in and practice typing using any web browser. The manufacturer offers both a home version for single users and a multi-user version designed especially for use in schools.

When you first log in to the program, a virtual, futuristic village appears, with different structures representing the various components of the program. For instance, there is the Learning Lab where more than 100 typing lessons are located, and a Practice Pavilion where you can practice free typing. You'll also find a Testing Center, Game Plaza and Maintenance, where administrators of the multi-user version can manage and track the users' progress. You can easily navigate to these different areas at any time using the top main navigation bar. While most typing for kids software allows you to create custom lessons and drills, the home version of this application does not. However, administrators using the school version have that capability.

Like many of the other typing programs we reviewed, All the Right Type offers typing games in addition to its core typing lessons. The games are fun to play but can still impart valuable keyboarding practice. While game-based learning isn't for everyone, it is particularly beneficial for young students and anyone who prefers interactive activities to stay focused and motivated while learning how to type.

The reporting tools in the home version of this typing software aren't as versatile as those in the school version, which includes comprehensive administrative controls, but they are sufficient. Whenever you complete a typing exercise or test, All the Right Type tracks your words per minute (WPM), accuracy percentage and the time it takes to complete an exercise. Your total number of errors and adjusted WPM for that particular session is also tracked.

One thing we especially like is that when you make a typing error, the software makes note of the error by highlighting the missed letter, number or symbol in red. The program doesn't allow you to move on to the next key until you strike the correct key. This forces you to be conscious of the mistakes you make, which in turn can help you better focus on your typing accuracy.

When it comes to learning how to touch-type, video instruction can supplement computer activities and boost the overall effectiveness of the application, especially if you are a visual, interactive learner. That said, the lack of video instruction is hardly detrimental to this typing software, and we find its training curriculum to be excellent nonetheless.

If you're seeking basic, no-frills typing software, look no further than TypingMaster Pro. This program delivers all of the essentials you need to improve your keyboarding skills, including an accumulative curriculum, timed tests and accuracy training. While the application doesn't offer much beyond that, TypingMaster Pro does boast a few features – including its unique Satellite feature – that make it worth looking into.

You can also choose any drill and test in the software to work on a specific typing weakness.

TypingMaster Pro earns a spot on our lineup because it delivers effective touch-typing instruction. However, there are a few noticeable drawbacks to this typing software. During typing tests, the application underscores the word you are typing. When you type quickly, this underlining element sometimes does not move fast enough from one word to the next, which seems to defeat the purpose of this feature.

The other issue we have with this typing program is its outdated interface. Compared to other typing programs on our lineup, TypingMaster Pro looks antiquated and obsolete. Its lack of polish doesn't necessarily affect its usability or effectiveness, but with so many typing programs that are more modern, the outdated interface hinders TypingMaster Pro's appeal.

Prism is statistical software for those analysts needing powerful yet not exhaustive routines. It was originally made for biological studies, but now includes several sophisticated non-linear capabilities as well as scientific graphing that would be useful to other scientists and engineers. Ease-of-use

The software has very modest requirements on the modern computer, needing only 30 MB of hard drive and a minimum of 128 MB of RAM. Version 5 runs on Windows 2000, XP or Vista and on the Macintosh. It will not run on earlier versions of Windows. Screen resolution is 1024 x 768 with at least 16 bit color. Spreadsheet table limits are: unlimited rows by 104 columns. The system downloaded quickly from the internet (“quickly” being dependent upon one’s computer and Internet connect) and installed with no problems on the Vista system.

As there are no manuals, the GraphPad folks have supported the new user with an extensive and easy-to-search Help menu, an on-line FAQ and problem database, a really nice tutorial (either as a video or written text), and an e-mail tech support address. It is unfortunate that there is no phone support, as both novice and experienced user can get maximal mileage from one well-researched phone call. The e-mail turnaround, however, is wonderfully rapid (less than one hour on my first attempt). The introductory tutorial is strongly recommended and will have the first-time user up and going within an hour. The search function within the Help menu was refreshingly sophisticated, and the use of quotes will find only those word strings containing everything between the quotes. Too many otherwise excellent statistical programs lack this function and have very poor indexing. The program is amazingly intuitive and not at all hard to learn on-the-fly.

Reset Trial Period

Prism creates a hidden file on first launch and checks the age of that file on each launch to determine how long you have used it for. To reset the trial period you just have to delete the file. You can do it at any point during the trial, or even after. It is the same process as for Prism 5

Here is the step-by-step process.

1. Open Terminal (can be found in Applications>Utilities)
2. Copy paste the following and hit return
