Average Malware CleanupAvira Premium definitely cleaned up my infested test systems better than Avira Antivirus Free 2013. It detected 76 percent of the threats, which is precisely average for recent products, while the free edition detected just 71 percent. Avira Premium's overall score of 6.2 points definitely beats the 5.7 points earned by the free product.

Other products have done quite a bit better. Norton AntiVirus (2013) and Kaspersky Anti-Virus (2013) both detected 89 percent of the samples. Norton and Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2013 share the top score in this test, 6.6 points.

Like quite a few current products, Avira Premium detected 100 percent of the samples that try to hide their activities using rootkit technology; the free edition caught just 80 percent. Avira Premium's rootkit removal score of 8.0 points is good, but nowhere near rootkit-killer Kaspersky's 9.4 points. For details on my malware removal tests, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Effective Malware BlockingAvira Premium also beat its free cousin in my malware blocking test, but just barely. The free edition detected 92 percent of the samples and scored 9.2 points, while the premium edition detected 95 percent and scored 9.3 points.

Webroot topped this test with 100 percent detection and an impressive 9.9 point score.Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+ 2013, SecureIT, Daily Safety Check Home Edition, andBullGuard Antivirus 2013 all managed 97 percent.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013: SafeSync

SafeSync offers 5GB of online storage, shared among the three machines in the licence. Simple back-ups can be scheduled and once data is in the Trend’s cloud, it can be accessed securely from any machine running your copy of Trend Titanium Maximum Security 2013.

Scanning our 50GB of mixed files took 9 min 55 sec and checked 17,396 files, giving a scan rate of 29.2 files/sec. This lies in the middle of the range we’ve seen from other Windows virus products, and is significantly higher than from the 2012 version of Trend Micro Titanium, which only managed 6.8 files/sec.

Running the same scan a second time checked the same number of files, but a couple of minutes faster, so there’s little fingerprinting of files, although the software still speeds up. It has a small resource footprint, slowing our 1GB file transfer by only two percent.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013: detection scores

AV-Test rated Trend Micro’s 2013 engine at 14.5/18, which is a good score, just behind the front runners. In fact, the score for protection against new attacks was a full 6.0/6.0, the first time we’ve seen this.

Unfortunately, it was not matched by the score for detection of established malware and system repair after attack, which only gave 4.0/6.0.

Trend Micro believes this category isn’t as important, because if detection works well enough, malware shouldn’t get to make system changes in the first place that need subsequent repair.

Impressively Easy InstallationTrustPort installed without a hitch on ten of my twelve malware-infested test systems. As always, ransomware on one system blocked all access to the desktop and start menu, making installation impossible. On another system, a malware process actively terminated the installer process every time it tried to start.

I solved both of these by creating a bootable TrustPort rescue CD on a clean system. I did have to install Microsoft's free Windows Automated Installation Kit, but the resulting CD boots to Windows PE, which is a lot nicer than booting to Linux. After a full scan using the bootable antivirus, I had no trouble finalizing installation of the regular antivirus.

Three EnginesIn addition to TrustPort's own antivirus engine, the product also scans using two licensed engines. One, code-named Xenon, comes from Bitdefender; the other, code-named Argon, is from AVG. Triple-scanning does naturally take a bit more system resources than just using one engine, so TrustPort limits how many engines it uses if the system is low on resources.

For testing, I absolutely wanted all three engines active. However, my virtual machine test systems necessarily have a limited amount of RAM and disk space. TrustPort tech support kindly supplied a tweak that allowed me to override the default behavior and enable all three engines.

Unimpressive Malware RemovalAs noted, getting TrustPort installed on my malware-infested test systems was easy, and I didn't run into any post-scan problems like those that plagued my testing of G Data AntiVirus 2014. However, when I tallied the results TrustPort failed to impress.

TrustPort detected 69 percent of the samples. That's a tad better than the 67 percent detected by ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall 2013, but not a great showing. Of the products tested using this current collection of malware, Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security detected the most—86 percent of them.

Just what is a security suite? Some vendors take a plain antivirus, glue on a firewall and another feature or two, and call it a suite. Bitdefender Total Security 2013 takes the opposite approach, including just about every imaginable security component in one big package.
All that protection might be overwhelming, but the Bitdefender Total Security's default Autopilot mode keeps user interaction to an absolute minimum. Rather than ask the user to make security decisions, Bitdefender makes its own choices. And rather than bombard the user with popups about all the great work it's doing, it modestly takes care of business in the background.

At first glance, the main window looks almost exactly like Bitdefender's standalone antivirus, with four big panels representing four major security components. However, by clicking left/right arrows or moving a slider control you can bring six other panels into view. You can rearrange the panels so the four that are most important to you come first.

Like the antivirus, Bitdefender Total Security comes with an optional desktop widget that's compatible with Windows 7, Vista, or XP. The widget reflects overall security status, lets the user know if there are any pending notification events, and graphically reflects firewall and antivirus activity.

Dr. Web is a Russian anti-virus company, as well as its flagship software suite. It was first released in 1992, and became the first anti-virus service in Russia.
