Photoscape is a little confusing when you first run the program. There are essentially seven main features within Photoscape: Animated GIF; Batch Editor; Editor; Page, where you can assign a page size and multiple-image layout; Merge, which is similar to Page, but more of a photo-montage or poster tool; Print; and Viewer, in which you can see the images in your folder displayed as thumbnails.

The Merge, Page, and Print features work more or less the same, but have nuances that may make each more or less useful to your particular application. Photoscape's Print, for example, is great if you are printing hard copies of your images. You can set the space between photos and drag and drop the pictures. You can set the size of the prints and fit as many as you can to the page. Photoscape's Page feature works in a similar manner but uses pixels to create a montage of images for web or blog use. You can't overlap and create digital paper art, like with Serif CraftArtist Compact (free), for example, but you can use Photoscape to easily create montages.

Photoscape's photo editing tools are mostly basic and include adjustments for brightness, color, and contrast, plus levels, sharpen, and filter tools. Some of the filters in Photoscape are fabulously unusual: Region makes a selected spot your focal point; Fake Tilt Shift makes wide photos look like miniature models by faking the depth of field and adding blur; Graduated Tint darkens the sky or top of your image. Reflection creates a reflection of your image in whatever color you choose.

Photoscape also includes the filters you may expect, such as Antique Photo and Vignetting. Compared to CameraBag 2, a photo editing tool that specializes in creating vintage style from your images, Photoscape is a little lacking in this department and may leave you feeling like you're flying blind. The vignette styles, for example, are labeled #1 through #10. At least you can click through and preview them all.

The Film Effect filters also are a step behind CameraBag 2, and unless you've ever used Velvia or Provia films, you'll probably just be a little confused. If you don't know what 35mm transparency film is, skip Photoscape's Film Effects.

Adobe rolled out Photoshop CC in the past week, enhancing the gold standard of image-editing applications with powerful new capabilities. Let's test these intelligent tools folded into the new version, and figure out if it's worth it to upgrade.

Once I installed the evaluation copy of Photoshop CC provided to me by Adobe, I noticed that the interface looked exactly the same as its predecessor, Photoshop CS6. That's good. Photoshop's workflow is excellent and hard to improve upon.

And then I was met with a pleasant surprise: Photoshop asked if I would like to import all my settings. Of course I would like to import my settings! Importing settings has become a tedious ritual every time I upgrade Photoshop, and it's always been an awkward routine involving exporting and then importing files that don't completely get the job done.

But now it was completely easy, and best of all, done immediately in a most comprehensive way. In one fell swoop, an accumulation of all the idiosyncratic settings and shortcuts I've developed since I first started using Photoshop 2.5 back in 1992 were seamlessly inserted into Photoshop CC. This review was off to a great start.

The key questions any user will be asking about the new Adobe Photoshop CS6 are, "Does it do even cooler things with my images? Does it perform better? Is it easier to work with?" The answer to all of these questions, I'm happy to report, is a resounding Yes. You would think that after a program has been the leader in its field for over 20 years, there wouldn't be much to add. But quite the opposite is the case with Adobe Photoshop CS6 , which improves both basic operations like cropping, along with tons of more nitty-gritty detail functions like adding dotted-lines to strokes.

In fact, the new version adds 62 percent more new features than the previous version, including a speed boost and some jaw-dropping new "content aware" tricks. Photoshop's interface, too, gets a welcome upgrade, thanks to some trimming and clever improvements—though the company is careful to always offer the option of reverting to the earlier look.

The new version will thrill nearly all categories of users, from photographers to designers. It isn't cheap, at $699 and $999 for the Extended edition (which adds 3D editing), though upgrades cost $199 and $399, respectively. A new Adobe option, Creative Cloud, gets you the Extended version along with the rest of the Creative Suite, starting at $49 a month. Despite its cost, Photoshop remains the ultimate image editor on the planet, though other apps, like Corel Paint Shop Pro ($80, 3.5 stars), GIMP (Free, 4 stars), and Serif PhotoPlus($90, 2.5 stars) have tried to unseat Adobe's app. It's refreshing to see the makers of such a successful program not sitting on their laurels, but instead continuing to make impressive advances in their art.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 is the latest version of arguably the world's most popular pro image editor. Does the new Photoshop justify the very pricey upgrade from CS4? We break it down in this review.

If Adobe is the United Federation of Planets, then it's probably reasonable to say that Photoshop is the U.S.S. Enterprise. It's their flagship product, the one that they will consistently be best known for, and the one with the weakest competition. You can say Flash is going to be outmoded by HTML 5 (if people could agree on a standard) or that you can use Final Cut Pro instead of Premiere Pro, or you can even opt for Motion instead of After Effects...but what are you going to use instead of Photoshop? The GIMP? And major advances in Adobe's Creative Suite tend to appear in Photoshop first, as was the case with the 64-bit version of Photoshop in CS4.

Of course there's still one competitor handling a design space Photoshop hasn't traditionally owned: Corel, with Painter. For digital painting, Corel has remained nigh unbeatable, while Photoshop has continued to dominate the field right in its title: photography work.

That may very well change with Photoshop CS5, which raises the bar yet again. For the purposes of this review I conscripted an illustrator friend of mine to play with some of the new features of Photoshop CS5, and after spending a week with it he concluded it was definitely a worthy upgrade to CS4.

It's difficult to really get into everything that's changed with CS5, but I'll try to be concise and focus on the big changes.

HERE'S MY HOLODECK: CONTENT-AWARE FILL

A few months ago, a video debuted on YouTube by Adobe which highlighted a feature they called Content-Aware Fill. The video circulated the internet fairly rapidly, and my experience in showing it to multiple people ranged from "holy crap, that's amazing" to "SORCERERS!" It was an impressive demonstration, but a healthy amount of skepticism was necessary. When presenting a new feature, most companies try to present it in the best possible light -- whether it works or not.

Now with Photoshop CS5 in front of me, I can tell you it works a heck of a lot better than I thought it would. So what is it? It may be better to show you than to try and explain.

Adobe Photoshop CS4

Adobe Photoshop has been a fixture of the image editing business for so long that despite the best efforts of Adobe's marketing department its name has taken on the status of a household word for image editing. The first version was launched for the Apple Macintosh computer in 1990, and the program quickly became the industry standard, a position it has held ever since. New versions of Photoshop have been released every year or two since 1990. They were numbered up until the launch of the eighth version, called Photoshop CS, in 2003. CS stands for Creative Suite, since Photoshop is now part of a range of creative graphics and media programs published by Adobe. 

The eleventh version of the program, Photoshop CS4, was launched in September 2008. I wrote a beta preview of it at the time, detailing some of the new features, but since then I've been using it on a daily basis and I've got to know the program pretty well, so it's finally time for a thorough in-depth review.

While the first Photoshop CS was a major upgrade from the previous version, the two subsequent versions, CS2 and CS3, were criticised by some people as being only minor updates, and many private users never bothered to update to the newer products. CS4 however is far more than a minor update of CS3. Whole chunks of the program have been re-written to make them faster, smoother and more effective, and many new features have been added.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 is brimming with so many image-editing tools that the biggest challenge facing it seems to be where to stuff them all. This latest version of Photoshop adds even more tools and enhancements to the mix, but it cleans up its act with a simple yet effective approach to palette organization.

I tried out the software in beta form; this is the first time Adobe has offered the public a nonfinal version of its image editing program. (Existing Photoshop CS2 users can download the free trial version.) Photoshop CS3, which will be Microsoft Windows Vista-compatible, will anchor Adobe's full Creative Suite, expected later this year. On its own, the shipping version will sell for .

Many Photoshop users opt for dual-monitor setups just so they'll have a place to stow the application's seemingly endless array of screen-hogging palettes. Photoshop CS3, however, introduces an important interface upgrade: resizable palette buttons with fly-out capabilities.

Both single-monitor and dual-monitor users can benefit from this upgrade. You can reduce the buttons to tiny size, or you can tear off the palettes and park them around your screen, as with previous Photoshop versions. A third option is to arrange them in one or two columns and choose only the palettes you want. At their smallest, the buttons are narrower than the tools palette (which also got a minor makeover--now you can resize it to be one column or two, as well).

The latest incarnation of Adobe's flagship image-editing application, Photoshop CS2 is packed with a variety of dramatic and practical enhancements. Perhaps the most exciting new feature is Vanishing Point, a filter with simple tools for drawing grids to define perspective planes in your image. Once Vanishing Point understands the image's angle of perspective, it can automatically distort a layer to match the scene. This makes it a cinch, for example, to map text or images onto the sides of buildings perfectly.

Even better, Vanishing Point features a clone stamp tool that works within the established perspective. Imagine a photo of a skyscraper shot from the ground; Vanishing Point could clone windows from the bottom floors onto the upper floors of the building, scaling down the clones in perfect perspective. Once you wrap your head around this tool, it's an invaluable asset.

Smart Objects are another breakthrough feature. Designate a layer as a Smart Object, and you can scale that layer down nondestructively, preserving the ability to restore the layer's original size at any time with no loss in quality. Make copies of a Smart Object, and the copies will be updated to reflect any changes you make to the original object. Imported vector art from Illustrator can also be made a Smart Object, allowing for lossless resizing. There are significant trade-offs—for instance, you can't apply filters to Smart Objects—but layer styles, blend modes, opacity changes, and most distortions are permitted.

The adoption of digital cameras, the demands of cross-media projects, and the volume of images required by even the simplest of Web sites have resulted in image overload for professional photographers, illustrators, and designers. Adobe Photoshop 7.0 ($609 list) addresses the very real issue of "image proliferation" with more efficient file management, easier retouching, and smarter Web output.

Photoshop's new, visual File Browser makes it easy to access and organize pictures. The multipane palette provides thumbnail views of the files in a selected directory. The File Browser also displays a standard tree of files and folders, as well as metadata, such as file stats, copyright, keywords, and EXIF (or digital camera settings) info. Besides performing simple file operations (like move or delete), you can rank and sort images. And digital photographers will love the ability to rotate images and rename files by the batch.

But the File Browser is really only a limited-function lightbox, not a full-featured asset management tool. For example, you can't search for files, nor can you edit the metadata from within the browser (though you can use the standard File Info dialog box to do so).

Adobe Photoshop has long set the industry standard for image-editing products. If you need professional output options, this is the application for you.

Now in its sixth version, Photoshop goes well beyond tools for touching up digital photographs. It has an abundance of Web graphics features, including Adobe ImageReady, and vector drawing tools. Meanwhile, Photoshop's real strength—image editing—is more solid than ever, and a new interface has cleaned up some of the clutter. Introduction

I am an amateur photographer, a passion I’ve had since 2000. In 2002 iPhoto became my photo management software, and I used Photoshop Elements for further editing my pictures. I switched to Aperture version 2.0 around 2009, keeping Photoshop Elements as my external editor. Last year, I upgraded to Photoshop CS5, and since then I always wanted to compare Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to Aperture, mainly because Aperture and Photoshop integration is poor.

This review/article about Lightroom 3.5 is the result of that investigation. To compare both applications in depth would take much more than a few pages, as you will read below. But at the end, my hope is that you will find some help when considering jumping to professional image management software.

Setting up the software

After installing the applications and entering the registration codes, a few basic settings are required before the photo work begins. Software such as Lightroom or Aperture needs to be customizedbefore you start. Your first step should be to go to Lightroom/Preferences… orAperture/Preferences… and adjust a few things for your specific workflow.

Both applications have pretty much the same set of preferences in general. For example, you can adjust some interface things such as fonts and window color.

There are a few differences that may offer some advantages in both applications. For example,Aperture does have preferences to name the labels (color you can attached to photos). It also has a preference to enable the Faces and new iCloud Photo Stream features. The major preference thatAperture has over Lightroom is a fully customizable keyboard shortcut.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a digital darkroom that will organise your photos, polish them to perfection with some exceptional editing tools, then help you share your favourites with the world.

New v5 features include a one-click perspective correction tool, while an enhanced healing brush allows you to heal or clone with brush strokes.
