eScan Internet Security Suite from MicroWorld Technologies, Inc. (Mumbai, India) is firewall softwaredesigned to block notifications while you are gaming, prevent memory-intensive processes for laptops and offer comprehensive digital protection and parental control. Firewall Performance
The firewall component of the eScan Internet Security Suite can monitor inbound and outbound traffic. It is set by default to filter incoming traffic. Unfortunately the firewall has difficulty protecting against common hacker techniques as it fails most leak tests.

Additional Security Features
Because the eScan suite is much more than a firewall, the product includes many other useful technologies and security features. For example, it can control the behavior of unwanted applications and protect against infections launched from USB memory devices or CD-ROMs. The product includes a feature called MicroWorld Winsock Layer, which scans traffic at the Winsock layer of the Windows operating system and either removes suspected data packets or releases clean traffic to the application layer.

The eScan Internet Security Suite checks for any suspicious activities on web pages that the user wants to access and it assesses the reputation of email senders based on a database of known senders. If an email appears from a domain associated with phishing schemes, eScan’s ability to check domain reputations allows it to protect users by not accepting the suspected traffic. The domain and IP reputation check is augmented by another technology that can detect attempts to install malware on the user’s system. With various levels of success, the host-intrusion prevention system attempts to combat:

Performance
Because VIPRE lays down a first layer of protection by managing patch updates to applications, it is not entirely fair to judge VIPRE's performance against competitors that relinquish patch-update discipline to end users. The thing that malware desperately wants to do is to get a toehold on an unpatched application so it can get a thread running. The invasion mechanism is often a drive-by download from a malicious website. These drive-by attacks are prevalent because of a burgeoning black market for commercial exploit kits. Often these threats search for known vulnerabilities in older versions of software because it is well known that users are not diligent about allowing updates to Java Runtime Environment, Chrome, iTunes, Firefox, and Adobe Flash Player, Reader and Acrobat, to name but a few. If you just make sure that you always have the latest updates to Windows and your applications, there is far less work for antivirus software to perform.

VIPRE's second layer of protection is to steer clear of malicious links by applying web filters. GFI's lab reports that the software finds more than 100,000 unique new malware threats every day. VIPRE updates customer installations on an ongoing basis to protect against these known threats. When a VIPRE installation flags a suspicious file based on certain traits, it places the file into quarantine and observes its behavior until its intentions become clear. If the suspicious file is malware, the information goes to the GFI labs so that the information can proliferate throughout the installed base.

The third level of VIPRE's protection is to scan for any malware that has penetrated the first two layers. VIPRE does not rescan known safe files, but it does scour everything else. It goes after rootkits, which are particularly difficult-to-detect parasites that attach themselves to the operating system and try to stay out of sight while they gain control of deep-level processes.

TrustPort has all the basics of internet security covered. It can protect from all types of malware and includes parental controls, email protection, website monitoring, a dynamic firewall and more. They have passed recent VB 100% and West Coast Labs tests and they provide automatic updates. Although TrustPort antivirus software has passed with two testing labs, AV-Test, AV-Comparatives and International Computer Security Association labs have not tested them. We looked for internet security suites that have passed all major tests.

The most significant problem we experienced with TrustPort involved the installation of the software. They offer a trial download through their website. Though we attempted numerous times on a few different machines, we could not get this internet security software to install correctly. This is a rare occurrence. All of the other products we tested installed completely and correctly via a download link. We also did not find the support information we needed to correct this problem and we found their support team unresponsive.

In terms of the modules that this internet security suite includes, it has tools for limiting your children's access to the internet as well as tools for managing port access, network access, email filters and a configurable firewall. This software includes an on-demand scanner and the ability to scan websites. It also scans audio and video files for malware. It does not include specific tools for encrypting chat conversations or protecting social media interactions. However, you can block access to these types of sites.

TrustPort's headquarters are in the Czech Republic and this security suite is available in more than 10 languages including English, Dutch, Italian and Russian. You can contact them by telephone or email with customer or technical support questions. They provide basic customer support as well as paid support options. You can view user manuals, FAQs, definitions and tutorials on their website. Ad-Aware Free Internet Security, one of the most popular spyware killers on the planet, just got better: It's not just an anti-spyware killer any more. The newest version, 8.3, adds anti-virus capabilities to its already very good job of detecting and killing spyware while keeping a low profile. It was previously known as Ad-Aware Free.

The newest version 8.3, as with the previous version, protects against rootkits, stealth attacks designed to escape detection and burrow their way into the operating system. New to this version is Genotype heuristics detection system, which Lavasoft claims is superior to its previous heuristics. PCWorld has not yet lab-tested this software and cannot offer an opinion on the antivirus feature's efficacy.

As in version 8.2, Ad-Aware Free promises to protect you against malware that tries to restore itself after a system reboot. Also useful is a "Simple mode" that lets you set your configuration once, and never have to do it again. If you prefer, you can toggle to Advanced Mode, where you can select advanced features for customization. Ad-Aware Free Internet Security is as simple to use as previous versions. Tell it to scan your system, and it finds spyware and other malware, and then deletes it or quarantines it for you. New in this version is the ability to schedule scans.

There is one drawback to Ad-Aware Free Internet Security. It doesn't provide real-time comprehensive protection, which means that to keep yourself safe, you'll have to regularly scan your system. (It provides basic real-time protection, but that doesn't include Registry protection, or real-time behavior-based heuristic scanning.) For full real-time protection you can get the $30 Ad-Aware Internet Security Pro or the new Ad-Aware Total Internet Security.

I won’t comment about its detection and virus removal capability but the inbuilt firewall is quite strict. Or should I say not so intelligent because it didn’t even allow common programs like explorer.exe and Firefox.exe to access Internet. I found it annoying to ask me such questions when they are obvious.

Also, the RAM memory and CPU taken up by background processes especially “Bullguard Scanner” hogs 99% of CPU power. This completely slows down other processes and overall working of computer.

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2013 certainly lives up to its name. This “titanium” security suite doesn’t let anything get through—in our tests, it earned excellent marks in just about every category. It also has a fairly user-friendly interface and a quick installation process, which makes it an all-around great pick.

In our real-world attack tests, which indicate how well an antivirus program will be able to block new malware attacks as it encounters them in the wild, Trend Micro’s suite completely blocked every threat that it faced. Needless to say, this means that the program will likely be able to keep you very secure, even when new malware programs are introduced in the future.

Trend Micro nabbed high marks in most of our other security tests. In our malware-zoo detection test, which exposes the program to a collection of malware that had been introduced in the preceding four months, Trend Micro’s package detected 100 percent of known malware samples. In our false-positive test, which checks to see whether a product mistakenly flags a known safe file as being dangerous, Trend Micro identified just one safe file (out of over 250,000) as malicious.

In addition, the suite did very well in our system cleanup test: It detected and disabled 100 percent of infections, and it managed to fully purge the system of 80 percent of those infections. This result puts it in second place, tied with G Data and Kaspersky, for total cleanup rate.

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2013 is also a fairly speedy and lightweight program—most of the time. In our performance tests, the program added just 0.3 second to startup time (compared to a system that had no antivirus program installed), and 3 seconds to shutdown time. However, we found that it dragged down file copy operations more than most of its competition did.

The suite’s scan times were on the slow side, too, with an on-demand (manual) scan taking 1 minute, 50 seconds (as compared to the average time of 1 minute, 33 seconds), and an on-access scan requiring 5 minutes, 41 seconds (as compared to the average time of 4 minutes, 50 seconds).

Installing the Trend Micro package is a breeze—you have just three screens to click through and an optional registration screen (which asks only for your email address). Note, however, that the program does try to install three separate Firefox add-ons: a browser exploit prevention add-on, which blocks malicious code from running; a certificate add-on, which checks the safety of websites, links, and wireless network connections; and a toolbar add-on, which also apparently checks the safety of links.

Trend Micro’s user interface is relatively easy to understand, though it’s not as polished or attractive as AVG’s, F-Secure’s, or Norton’s. The main window has five tabs along the top: an Overview tab, and others for PC/Mobile, Privacy, Data, and Family. The Overview tab shows your protection status, along with some additional stats (such as how many threats have been stopped). This screen also has a scan button, a settings button, and a security-report button.

The PC/Mobile tab shows PC- and mobile-related security features, such as the system tuner and the rescue-disk creator, as well as links to get Trend Micro’s apps for your Android devices and Mac systems. The Privacy tab deals with social networking, the Data tab covers data security along with Trend Micro’s secure erase feature, and the Family tab holds parental controls.

F-Secure Internet Security 2013 came in first in several of our malware detection, blocking, and removal tests. It successfully blocked attacks, detected and disabled infections, and proved adept at cleaning up all traces of malware, landing at the top of this year’s security suite roundup.

In our real-world attack test, F-Secure completely blocked 100 percent of attacks. This test indicates how well the product will successfully block new malware attacks as it encounters them in the wild. But F-Secure wasn’t unique: Of the nine security suites we tested, four others also managed to completely block all attacks: Bitdefender, G Data,Norton, and Trend Micro.

F-Secure also put up great scores in our malware-zoo detection test: The suite detected 99 percent of known malware samples. This score puts it in the top five of the security suites we tested, though it’s at the bottom of that group (G Data, McAfee, Norton, and Trend Micro all posted detection rates of 99.7 percent or higher). F-Secure flagged just two safe files (out of over 250,000) as malicious, which is a good false-positive rate overall. However, since four of the suites achieved a perfect score in false-positive testing, and two suites flagged only one safe file as malicious, on this measure F-Secure still ends up in the bottom half of the list.

In our system cleanup test, F-Secure performed very well. In fact, it’s at the top of the list (alongside Bitdefender) after detecting and disabling all infections on our test PC and completely removing 90 percent of infections. So F-Secure should effectively dispatch any malware it finds on your machine.

While F-Secure does an excellent job of detecting, disabling, blocking, and cleaning up malware, all of this power comes at a price (a small one, to be sure): F-Secure added 6 seconds to startup time (compared to a system with no antivirus software installed)—the worst showing out of all of the suites we tested. It also added 5 seconds to shutdown time. F-Secure performed well in the rest of our PC speed tests overall, but it significantly slowed application installation.

Scanning speeds were better, though. F-Secure took second place in both on-demand (manual) scan tests (1 minute, 16 seconds) and on-access (automatic) scans (3 minutes, 50 seconds). Both results are better than average by a healthy margin.

The suite installs quickly and easily, with just four screens to click through and no restart required. It doesn’t install any extras (such as a toolbar), nor does it change any of your default settings. It does install a launcher, which is what you open when you double-click the program’s system tray icon. The launcher has three buttons to take you to different program screens: a computer-security screen, an online-safety screen, and a third for F-Secure’s website.

F-Secure’s user interface is sleek and easy to understand. It presents a large round checkmark (or X mark) that shows your protection status, as well as three modules for checking your security status, F-Secure’s extra tools and features, and statistics and reports. Below these modules is a scan button, an update button, and a settings button. The settings are fairly easy to get around, and each screen has a quick explanation of what the feature does and how it works.

With excellent protection and a user-friendly interface, F-Secure is definitely worth a look. This security package adds a little extra weight to your system, but if you can get past those performance issues, it’s a great program.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 is a solid antimalware suite that provides admirable protection and an excellent settings interface. This program looks a little different from the other suites we tested, mainly because of its teal-and-white colors, in contrast to the green-is-good/red-is-bad user interface that most other security packages use. But once you get past the fact that teal is sort of the same as green (trust us, this takes a moment), it’s a good program that will keep you safe from most incoming attacks.

In our real-world attack test, Kaspersky completely blocked 94.4 percent of attacks. Unfortunately, the 5.6 percent of attacks that it failed to block completely were not blocked at all—in other words, our test system got infected 5.6 percent of the time. The real-world attack test demonstrates how well a suite will be able to block brand-new malware attacks as it encounters them in the wild, so this is not a great sign.

Kaspersky’s suite was able to detect 98.1 percent of known malware samples in our malware-zoo detection test. This detection rate is fairly good, but seven of the nine suites we tested had higher rates (98.8 percent or more). Kaspersky did have an excellent false-positive rate, as it didn’t flag any safe files as malicious; that puts Kaspersky in the top four of the suites we tested for that measure.

In our system cleanup test, the Kaspersky software did an excellent job of detecting, disabling, and fully cleaning up infections. It detected and disabled all infections on our test PC, and fully cleaned up all traces of malware 80 percent of the time. Of the suites we tested, only two packages (Bitdefender and F-Secure) cleaned up more infections (90 percent), while three suites, including Kaspersky’s, cleaned up 80 percent.

Kaspersky will add a little weight to your system, and it will slow down some operations more than most of its competitors will. In our performance tests, the program added just over 2 seconds to startup time (as compared to a PC with no antivirus program installed), and just over 10 seconds to shutdown time. Although that doesn’t seem like a lot, those extra seconds make Kaspersky’s suite one of the heaviest antimalware programs we tested (it placed seventh in startup time and dead last in shutdown time). In addition, Kaspersky’s software dragged down the speed of file downloads, as well as of file copying operations.

Protection
Bitdefender, like most antivirus products, uses virus definitions to identify known threats.Bitdefender Active Virus Control monitors every process on your PC, instead of just when they start up. Bitdefender takes notes on how processes are behaving, and if they act malicious it will act based on your settings or AutoPilot.

By default, Bitdefender has a feature called auto scan. Instead of running a manual scan on your system, Bitdefender auto scan basically scans your system as it goes along. I see it best as working only when it needs to, or when something on the system has been changed. I recommend keeping auto scan enabled, since you won't have to run full system scans to satisfy the antivirus engine. 

Bitdefender's Antivirus engine also detects deemed-malicious cookies, such as tracking cookies. While cookies are really just text files that hold information for websites, I think it is a additional feature that is useful if you want to clean your system of malicious cookies that browsers don't clear for some odd reason

Since I reviewed this software before I got my new computer (that is very powerful and allows me to run virtual machines with ease), for an active video of Bitdefender performing in an actual intrusion/protection I suggest you go see Matt Rizo's video. I also suggest you subscribe to him and follow his website as he specializes in PC security.

Firewall
When you install Bitdefender, you also get a built in firewall with the suite. This firewall is more advanced than the default Windows firewall. The Bitdefender firewall offers options to block applications from accessing the internet, and you can also white list applications as well.

Since Bitdefender has its own firewall in the software, the Windows Firewall will be disabled. However there shouldn't be any warnings triggered by Windows Security Center since Bitdefender contains a firewall.

The firewall in Bitdefender is very useful, but was also the biggest problem for me. Using the firewall also contains a feature that scans programs for possibly malicious activity. Apparently, Bitdefender deemed processes essential to the function of Windows XP. When my PC was unresponsive at startup, I basically had to wait over 30 minutes for my system to become responsive, and then Bitdefender would popup with a list of processes that it blocked. After allowing the processes, a few days later Bitdefender would block them again, despite me allowing them to run just days before. I'm not sure why this was happening, but I ended up disabling the Firewall just to skip this trouble. Also, this was happening when Bitdefender was on normal sensitivity (which is odd).
