Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013: SafeSync

SafeSync offers 5GB of online storage, shared among the three machines in the licence. Simple back-ups can be scheduled and once data is in the Trend’s cloud, it can be accessed securely from any machine running your copy of Trend Titanium Maximum Security 2013.

Scanning our 50GB of mixed files took 9 min 55 sec and checked 17,396 files, giving a scan rate of 29.2 files/sec. This lies in the middle of the range we’ve seen from other Windows virus products, and is significantly higher than from the 2012 version of Trend Micro Titanium, which only managed 6.8 files/sec.

Running the same scan a second time checked the same number of files, but a couple of minutes faster, so there’s little fingerprinting of files, although the software still speeds up. It has a small resource footprint, slowing our 1GB file transfer by only two percent.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013: detection scores

AV-Test rated Trend Micro’s 2013 engine at 14.5/18, which is a good score, just behind the front runners. In fact, the score for protection against new attacks was a full 6.0/6.0, the first time we’ve seen this.

Unfortunately, it was not matched by the score for detection of established malware and system repair after attack, which only gave 4.0/6.0.

Trend Micro believes this category isn’t as important, because if detection works well enough, malware shouldn’t get to make system changes in the first place that need subsequent repair.

TrustPort has all the basics of internet security covered. It can protect from all types of malware and includes parental controls, email protection, website monitoring, a dynamic firewall and more. They have passed recent VB 100% and West Coast Labs tests and they provide automatic updates. Although TrustPort antivirus software has passed with two testing labs, AV-Test, AV-Comparatives and International Computer Security Association labs have not tested them. We looked for internet security suites that have passed all major tests.

The most significant problem we experienced with TrustPort involved the installation of the software. They offer a trial download through their website. Though we attempted numerous times on a few different machines, we could not get this internet security software to install correctly. This is a rare occurrence. All of the other products we tested installed completely and correctly via a download link. We also did not find the support information we needed to correct this problem and we found their support team unresponsive.

In terms of the modules that this internet security suite includes, it has tools for limiting your children's access to the internet as well as tools for managing port access, network access, email filters and a configurable firewall. This software includes an on-demand scanner and the ability to scan websites. It also scans audio and video files for malware. It does not include specific tools for encrypting chat conversations or protecting social media interactions. However, you can block access to these types of sites.

TrustPort's headquarters are in the Czech Republic and this security suite is available in more than 10 languages including English, Dutch, Italian and Russian. You can contact them by telephone or email with customer or technical support questions. They provide basic customer support as well as paid support options. You can view user manuals, FAQs, definitions and tutorials on their website. Impressively Easy InstallationTrustPort installed without a hitch on ten of my twelve malware-infested test systems. As always, ransomware on one system blocked all access to the desktop and start menu, making installation impossible. On another system, a malware process actively terminated the installer process every time it tried to start.

I solved both of these by creating a bootable TrustPort rescue CD on a clean system. I did have to install Microsoft's free Windows Automated Installation Kit, but the resulting CD boots to Windows PE, which is a lot nicer than booting to Linux. After a full scan using the bootable antivirus, I had no trouble finalizing installation of the regular antivirus.

Three EnginesIn addition to TrustPort's own antivirus engine, the product also scans using two licensed engines. One, code-named Xenon, comes from Bitdefender; the other, code-named Argon, is from AVG. Triple-scanning does naturally take a bit more system resources than just using one engine, so TrustPort limits how many engines it uses if the system is low on resources.

For testing, I absolutely wanted all three engines active. However, my virtual machine test systems necessarily have a limited amount of RAM and disk space. TrustPort tech support kindly supplied a tweak that allowed me to override the default behavior and enable all three engines.

Unimpressive Malware RemovalAs noted, getting TrustPort installed on my malware-infested test systems was easy, and I didn't run into any post-scan problems like those that plagued my testing of G Data AntiVirus 2014. However, when I tallied the results TrustPort failed to impress.

TrustPort detected 69 percent of the samples. That's a tad better than the 67 percent detected by ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall 2013, but not a great showing. Of the products tested using this current collection of malware, Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security detected the most—86 percent of them.
