All the Right Type educational typing software is widely used in schools, corporations and even military organizations. While it isn't the most polished or modern typing software on the market, the application has sound teaching techniques developed by educators that can effectively teach anyone how to touch-type.

This latest version of All the Right Type is web based (a downloadable version is still available if you prefer), so you can conveniently log in and practice typing using any web browser. The manufacturer offers both a home version for single users and a multi-user version designed especially for use in schools.

When you first log in to the program, a virtual, futuristic village appears, with different structures representing the various components of the program. For instance, there is the Learning Lab where more than 100 typing lessons are located, and a Practice Pavilion where you can practice free typing. You'll also find a Testing Center, Game Plaza and Maintenance, where administrators of the multi-user version can manage and track the users' progress. You can easily navigate to these different areas at any time using the top main navigation bar. While most typing for kids software allows you to create custom lessons and drills, the home version of this application does not. However, administrators using the school version have that capability.

Like many of the other typing programs we reviewed, All the Right Type offers typing games in addition to its core typing lessons. The games are fun to play but can still impart valuable keyboarding practice. While game-based learning isn't for everyone, it is particularly beneficial for young students and anyone who prefers interactive activities to stay focused and motivated while learning how to type.

The reporting tools in the home version of this typing software aren't as versatile as those in the school version, which includes comprehensive administrative controls, but they are sufficient. Whenever you complete a typing exercise or test, All the Right Type tracks your words per minute (WPM), accuracy percentage and the time it takes to complete an exercise. Your total number of errors and adjusted WPM for that particular session is also tracked.

One thing we especially like is that when you make a typing error, the software makes note of the error by highlighting the missed letter, number or symbol in red. The program doesn't allow you to move on to the next key until you strike the correct key. This forces you to be conscious of the mistakes you make, which in turn can help you better focus on your typing accuracy.

This typing software offers a number of customization options that allow you to tailor and enhance your learning experience. Much like the software's lessons, these typing games are designed to further hone specific typing skills, including accuracy, speed, dexterity and rhythm.

Typing Instructor Platinum's training module is highly effective, but the software is missing a key element that could make it even more so: video instruction. When it comes to learning how to touch-type, video instruction can supplement computer activities and boost the overall effectiveness of the application, especially if you are a visual, interactive learner. That said, the lack of video instruction is hardly detrimental to this typing software, and we find its training curriculum to be excellent nonetheless.

If you're seeking basic, no-frills typing software, look no further than TypingMaster Pro. This program delivers all of the essentials you need to improve your keyboarding skills, including an accumulative curriculum, timed tests and accuracy training. While the application doesn't offer much beyond that, TypingMaster Pro does boast a few features – including its unique Satellite feature – that make it worth looking into.

You can also choose any drill and test in the software to work on a specific typing weakness.

TypingMaster Pro earns a spot on our lineup because it delivers effective touch-typing instruction. However, there are a few noticeable drawbacks to this typing software. During typing tests, the application underscores the word you are typing. When you type quickly, this underlining element sometimes does not move fast enough from one word to the next, which seems to defeat the purpose of this feature.

The other issue we have with this typing program is its outdated interface. Compared to other typing programs on our lineup, TypingMaster Pro looks antiquated and obsolete. Its lack of polish doesn't necessarily affect its usability or effectiveness, but with so many typing programs that are more modern, the outdated interface hinders TypingMaster Pro's appeal.

TuneUp Utilities 2013 is touted as your "ultimate PC cleaner, optimizer and troubleshooter." Yet how well does this bundle of PC cleanup utlilities really work? For this review, we put the latest edition of TuneUp Utilities to the test.

Overview

Sophisticated and complex equipment like your car or PC requires periodic maintenance. With your car, you need to check the air pressure and tread wear in your tires, replace the oil and various filters, and eventually get a tuneup to make sure the engine is performing correctly.

As you continue to use your laptop or desktop PC, it might also need a tuneup. When you install and uninstall software, pieces of the installation are frequently left behind, including no longer necessary registry entries and shortcuts that now lead to nowhere, for instance.

Even with currently installed applications, unnecessary files may sometime reside on the PC without your knowledge, such as temporary files needed for the installation but not removed after the installation is completed, unrequested additions to your Start menu, and update software which is automatically loaded at system start-up.

These -- and other problems such as fragmented or useless disk files building up over time -- can have an impact on your laptop's performance.

One problem with regaining performance through a system cleanup is that it's hard to figure outexactly what needs your attention. There are free and low-cost utilities that examine specific areas of your system, such as the registry, and perform pruning of no longer installed applications. Some hard disk defragmentation is performed automatically in recent versions of Windows, and the defragment tool can also be manually launched. However, few of us have the time, wherewithal or even knowledge to perform a total system inspection and cleanup with these kinds of tools alone.

That's the reason behind utility packages that look at many areas of potential clutter, such as TuneUp Utilities 2013.

Performance

In testing TuneUp Utilities 2013 on a Lenovo Thinkpad 400s running Windows 7, I determined that the tuneup utilities package would be easy to use at various levels of user sophistication. For a novice, the 1-Click Maintenance mode is probably the most reasonable. It runs many of the tests, and it delivers the results in an easy to understand format.

During my test run on a laptop that's had many applications installed and uninstalled over several years, the 1-Click Maintenance run uncovered problems with the registry, broken shortcuts, browser items to clean up, and recommendations to optimize startup and shutdown. Clicking on the individual results brought up a list of exactly what problems were discovered in the scan.
